Subversive Theatre is honored to bring to Buffalo this Tony Award-nominated new masterpiece — set amidst the chaos of the Liberian Civil War in 2003, ECLIPSED takes audiences on an intensely personal walk in the shoes of four young women held as captive wives of a rebel commandant.
Since its Broadway debut featuring Lupita Nyong’o in 2016, ECLIPSED has fast gained acclaim as a testament to the power of defiance in the face of the worst of human degradations. Based on the author’s interviews with dozens of real-life survivors of the conflict, Zimbabwean/American actress Danai Gurira (famous for her roles in “The Walking Dead” and “Black Panther”) has written an empowering drama with heart-rending twists and even beautiful moments of comedy that celebrate the enduring spirit in us all.
Our production of ECLIPSED is the 9th edition of Subversive Theatre’s “Black Power Play Series” which highlights plays that offer a radical discussion of race, repression, and resistance. For this daring project, we’re excited to welcome Ebony Pace for her directorial debut in our den of subversion. The cast features Janae Leonard, Shawnell Tillery, Robyn Fonn, Nina Brown, and Davida Tolbert.
