March for Transit Justice
August 29, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Gathering at Ferry Circle to march along what was once the route #7, a bus line that served multiple west side neighborhoods for more than 120 years, even dating back to the days of streetcars. (The entire route was slashed on May 24th, along with the #29 Wohlers, #54 Military (in Niagara Falls), and two additional commuter routes, the #68 George Urban and #79 Tonawanda.)
These bus routes matter–and its time riders demonstrate we’ve had enough cuts!
These recent cuts were made to supplement extra buses on overcrowded routes like #19 Bailey, but conditions changed when NFTA restored fare collection June 29 and removed a 12-foot barrier between passengers and the bus operator. The move permitted a capacity of up to 24 passengers per bus, where before with the barrier it was only 15. Therefore, demand for supplementing overcrowded buses fell. It’s time NFTA’s Board of Commissioners and our local, statewide and federal decision makers get the message you cannot balance a budget on the backs of people with the fewest options of getting to their job, their home or their groceries.
Join us at 2pm to help make signs! And if you cannot walk or march, you can drive or ride and still be a part of the event. We ask that cars follow behind us and bikers ride along the sides.
Please note that all participates must be masked at all times.
