Developing Islam-informed Social Work Education during Jihad in Somalia
March 2 @ 12:15 pm - 1:30 pm
Dr. Lacey Sloan is a wanderer who currently works as a UNICEF-Somalia consultant, and Associate Professor Social Work at the University of Vermont.
This presentation will describe Dr. Sloan’s work as a UNICEF-Somalia consultant supporting the development of social work and social work education in Somalia. Due to decades of conflict, instability, drought and famine, mechanisms for child protection in Somalia are limited. Major child protection concerns include the recruitment of child soldiers, child marriages and female genital mutilation. UNICEF identified development of a workforce of social workers as the best sustainable solution to address these and other challenges.
