Defund the Police

June 6, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

At Niagara Sq, Buffalo. Our communities are facing a turning point. In recent weeks, police killings, public lynchings, and other forms of state-sanctioned brutality fueled by white supremacy have brought people into the streets.

The City of Buffalo and WNY region are no stranger to the types of acts mentioned above. Our own Buffalo Common Council voted on Thursday, 6/4/20 to continue the precedent of annual increases for the Buffalo Police Department, despite the public outcry to defund. Later the same day, BPD officers dressed in riot gear pushed a peacefully protesting resident to the ground, causing significant bleeding and head trauma. This was one moment amidst a tradition of violence from local law enforcement who have taken the lives of Rafael Pito Rivera, Jose Hernandez-Rossy, Wardel Meech Davis, Marcus Neal, and more.

Please join allies Showing Up For Racial Justice (SURJ)–Buffalo, NY, Black Love Resists In the Rust and partners to demand we #DefundThePolice and justice for the victims of police killings.

For those of us who are white, please bring signs and visuals that read “End White Silence.” Now is the time to make it clear which side of the movement for racial justice you are on. And feel welcome to include the names of the white Buffalo Common Council members who voted in favor of the BPD budget this week: Joel Feroleto, Mitch Nowakowski, Joseph Golombek, Jr. and Chris Scanlon.

Masks/face coverings, hand sanitizer, and physical distancing are encouraged. Attendees- especially if this is their first time- are also encouraged to pay attention to trained individuals who will be giving directions and guidance for staying safe.
