After years of fighting to correct the injustice of money bail in New York State, advocates won a huge victory last year when the bail system was overhauled to keep people from being jailed just for being poor. As reforms have begun to empty the jails of legally innocent people and allowed for everyone to have a fair shot at a trial, we have seen a massive backlash from the people who benefit from the mass incarceration status quo. In particular, law enforcement, the billion dollar bail industry, and state lawmakers who want to use bail reform as a political tool to gain power have been attacking the new law. These stakeholders in the criminal injustice system have spread misinformation and fear in order to undermine the fact that bail reform is working to stem the overuse of jails and ensure equal justice for all.

Come to this VIRTUAL town hall to find out for yourself the facts about bail reform and make up your own mind about the topic. Share your own experiences with the bail system if you have a personal story, and make your voice heard to protect bail reform from any rollbacks!

The event will begin with educational activities to build awareness of the facts of bail, followed by speakers from the legal community, local lawmakers, and people who have felt the direct impact of the injustice of bail in their own lives. Speakers can sign up to share 2 minutes of testimony on the night of the event.

This event is co-sponsored by Partnership for the Public Good, Citizen Action!, WNY Peace Center, Voice Buffalo, and National Action Network.
